Blockchain technology has been tested by multiple healthcare companies around the world, but the European firms don’t seem to know much about the benefits of this technology. International Data Corporation (IDC) recently released this information on June 6th, detailing the discoveries found in a recent survey.

According to the collected data, there are approximately 44% of the healthcare organizations in Europe that haven’t heard of distributed ledger technology (DLT).

However, it is important to note that only 12% of those organizations are connected to the technology in some way. Of that 12%, some kind of blockchain initiative has been developed by 1%, while another 1% is involved in multiple DLT projects, as stated in “IDC Survey Spotlight,” which is the title of the research report.

The IDC surveyed 290 healthcare firms within Europe’s borders to collect this data, though the report also contains information from their European Vertical Market Survey from 2018 and 2019. Based on this information, the European healthcare industry seems to have three main use cases –

Transaction agreements
Identity management
Shared records management

Identity management appeared to have the most projects in production at 2%. However, in the next 12 months, there are 6% that are planning to adopt the technology as well.

Booz Allen Hamilton and Data Foundation collaborated to release a report, showing the potential for blockchain implementation within multiple industries. This report helps the US government to understand how the technology should be used in different fields, including the many projects that are presently in place with agencies like the Department of Health and Human Services.
